About Us

The Issaquah School District Student Equity Council is a recently-formed, student-led group focused on developing district-wide policies, projects, and programs that equitably reflect the needs and experiences of our increasingly diverse student-body. Our mission is to bring together voices from across the Issaquah School District student body in advocacy for a more equitable learning community. The strength of our group is dependent on our ability to represent the diversity of the ISD student body. We are high schoolers from across the district, with different backgrounds and experiences, but united in our mission of building a more just school system for all. Read more about our team here.

FAQ

What do you do as a council?

Meeting weekly, we discuss equity-related issues we’re seeing in the schools, gather community-input on possible solutions, and lead change in coordination with district staff. We lead our own projects, but also contribute to district ones. Our aim as a council is to create a space for disenfranchised students to learn and succeed in a school that supports them.

Why was the council formed?

Racism, homophobia, and other forms of discrimination is a daily challenge in ISD. This painful reality is why we exist and is illustrated here. The district’s current policies and programs fail to adequately address these equity issues. That is unacceptable, and change led by and for the students is needed. View the ISD's Diversity Report here.

How is the council structured?

Because of the breadth of different issues under the umbrella of equity work, our council is divided into “affinity groups” that concentrate on the unique needs and experiences of different identity-communities within our student body. In order to create a safe and constructive frame for our work, each group is built by those who identify with its focus. Visit each of these groups on their page.

How can I get involved?

For ISD students, target applications are open year-round, and term applications open at the end of each season. Other organizations can contact us via isd.equity@gmail.com, or through our contact form!
