The Amenities and Clothing subgroup focuses on changes regarding school buildings and clothing. In order to make a school’s environment more inclusive for all identities, changes regarding bathroom signage, bathroom passage, accessibility to menstrual products, and more are necessary for nurturing the minds of developing youth. Ages all across the board, elementary school to middle school to high school, have to face the societal pressures of gender. As the LGBTQ+ Affinity Group, we want to prevent students from feeling uncomfortable expressing their gender identity and having to conform to the social structure of gender and heteronormativity. To avoid students from being singled out, we are pushing for things such as gender-neutral bathroom passes for elementary schools, some gender-neutral bathroom signage in schools across the district, and the normalization of menstrual products in all bathrooms. We are also working on resources in the form of compiling a list of areas where people can purchase gender neutral clothing, safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth, safe spaces for people transitioning, where to find contraceptives and free or low-cost menstrual products, etc.
